What’s happening with ESPM?
The U.S. government is currently discussing the future of ESPM, the energy benchmarking tool widely used to measure and track buildings’ energy and water consumption, as well as greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a cornerstone for compliance with local and federal mandates, such as New York City’s LL84 and California’s AB 802, and is embedded into operational routines for sustainability teams across the country.
Nothing official has been confirmed yet. However, the U.S. government may reduce, alter, or even sunset ESPM as early as October 1, 2025 (the beginning of the next federal fiscal year).
